Plant innate immune receptors: diversity, deployment and dissection

Jonathan Jones (JJ)

After a PhD in plant genetics in Cambridge, postdoctoral work at Harvard and 5 years at a startup agbiotech company in Oakland, CA, JJ joined the Sainsbury Laboratory, Norwich UK in 1988. He has made numerous and sustained contributions to understanding the plant immune system. He discovered the first transmembrane cell surface receptors involved in immunity in plants, and provided key insights into pathogen recognition and defense signaling. In particular, his recent basic science work has focused on mechanisms by which the Arabidopsis RPS4/RRS1 immune receptor complex converts recognition of bacterial effectors AvrRps4 or PopP2 into defense activation. He has also been a strong advocate for the benefits of GM crops, exemplified by his own work to control potato late blight (the biotic cause of the Irish potato famine) using genes from wild relatives of potato. He works closely with David Sainsbury’s 2Blades foundation (http://2blades.org) on 21st century solutions to crop disease problems.

He was elected member of EMBO in 1998, Fellow of the Royal Society in 2003, and was elected Foreign Associate of US National Academy of Sciences in 2015.
