Seminar:Structure and Function of ENaC and ASIC ion channels

Speaker: Prof. Cecilia M. Canessa

Department of Cellular & Molecular Physiology

Yale University School of Medicine

Abstract:

Dr. Cecilia Canessa will briefly review the ENaC/Deg family of ion channels and highlight the contributions from her laboratory to the field. Specifically, she will discuss the importance of Epithelial Na+ Channel (ENaC) in physiology and the work that led to elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying blood pressure control in pathological states. In the second part of the presentation, she will introduce Acid Sensing Ion Channels (ASIC), another member of the ENaC/Deg family, which is a neuronal channel activated by H+ ions. Recent and ongoing work on structure/function of ASIC will be presented.
