Seminar

Topic: Bacterial Protein Translocation: a single molecule study

Speaker: Arnold J.M. Driessen

Department of Molecular Microbiology, Groningen Biomolecular Science and Biotechnology Institute, and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, University of Groningen, The Netherlands.

Abstract:

The heterotrimeric SecYEG complex comprises a protein-conducting channel in the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. SecYEG functions together with the motor protein SecA in preprotein translocation. SecYEG can also associate with a translating ribosome to mediate membrane protein insertion. We have used single molecule techniques, advanced membrane protein reconstitution methods and chemical biology approaches to address mechanistic and structural questions on the protein translocase.
