Biography:Dr. Conggang Li obtained his B.S. degree from Wuhan University in 1997, M.S. degree in 2000 from Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ph.D. from Florida State University and National High Magnetic Laboratory, U.S.A in 2007; He did postdoctoral training at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2011 he received 1000 Young Talent Project award and started independent research at Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics. Dr. Li’s research focuses on the development and application of NMR methods towards characterization of protein and nucleic acid structure, dynamics and function in live cells.

Abstract:Whether the structure of proteins determined in isolated, purified form truly represents its native structure in cells remains a question. Here we show that nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) with proper labeling is capable of providing high-resolution structure for proteins and nucleic acids in complex intracellular or the mimic cellular environment. We investigated several model proteins, and nucleic acids under crowded, confined environment and in living cells by NMR and the results show that cellular environment influence protein structure and functions, hence environmental effects have to be taken account into bio-macromolecular studies.
