Biography:
Thomas Lecuit trained at the Ecole Normale Supérieur of Paris, did a PhD in developmental biology at EMBL in Heidelberg and received a postdoctoral training in cell biology at Princeton University with Eric Wieschaus, Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine in 1995. Dr. Lecuit became a group leader at IBDM in Marseille in 2001, and currently is a tenured research director leading an international group of biologists and physicists. Dr. Lecuit is the director of the Turing Centre for Living Systems, based in Marseille, an interdisciplinary Centre studying the complexity and self-organization in biology. He is also laureate of prestigious awards, including the Liliane Bettencourt Prize for Life Sciences (2015) and the Silver Medal of CNRS (2015). Dr. Lecuit was appointed Professor at the Collège de France in Paris, chair “Dynamics of Living Systems” in 2016. Dr. Lecuit is an editor of the journal Development and on the board of reviewing editors of Science. He is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, EMBO, and member of French Académie des Sciences and of Academia Europaea as well.
Abstract:
In the past 15 years, Thomas Lecuit has developed interdisciplinary studies of cell and tissue morphogenesis and mechanics, through the combination of genetics, cell biology, quantitative live imaging and biophysical approaches. His main research interests are the mechanisms of tissue cohesion and plasticity during development, with an emphasis on how cell mechanics, namely adhesion and contractility, are controlled in space and time by mechano-chemical signalling processes. He has authored over 60 publications, including 9 in Nature.
